On Line Gateway

An e-mail from the Director - 09.09.07

Dear Promads:

Most of you are aware that we do have now Project Madurai implementation
of the Distributed Proof-reading gateway- an online system that allows
Promads to either key-in or proof-read etexts one page at a time:

http://www.projectmadurai.org.vt.edu/

DP-PM was specially installed to overcome key problems we faced:
volunteers not having access to printed books or time constraints to
complete a whole etext either in key-in or proof-reading. By storing
online scanned images of printed books and limiting the engagement
of Promads to type or proof-read only one page at a time, we felt
that etext preparation should pick up pace.

I notice that 47 Promads signed up till date at this gateway but only
5-6 have been participating in a continued manner. With the DPPM,
we have had anywhere from 50-100 pages done each month.

Last month (Aug 07) I notice that the output reached lowest since
we have had DPPM in operation for over 2 years. Only 8 pages
done during the entire month. I am anxious to know if Promads are
having some serious access or usage problems.

It will help us a lot if all those who did sign up at DPPM and tried it
post their experiences and also problems if any they faced recently.
We can then try to fix things as quickly as possible. Without input
from Promads, we are at total loss.
